"It was a scrappy game, and the pitch didn't particularly help out there. John Filan has kept us in with a penalty save as well as two other outstanding saves, but I also thought for fight and spirit and determination, I thought our lads were terrific.

"This will be twice I will have said I didn't see the incident, but I didn't. I know some other people said it wasn't but thankfully Filan pulled off a tremendous save.

"To me, it was two honest teams, and the game just didn't need eight bookings. I didn't even realise six of them were ours until the end. It seems to me that every foul is a booking, and that can't be right.

"We're not a dirty team, and I'm disappointed to have lost two players through suspension when we are in a relegation fight. That has taken the shine off today.

"It's ironic how it happens in football. Taylor broke his metatarsal against Leeds in the F.A. Cup last year, worked exceptionally hard to get fit and then in the reserves he broke his leg against Newcastle, and just under a year later, he scores a wonder goal in the Premiership, and I'm really pleased for him.

"We would have lost that game five weeks ago, I think the players deserve enormous credit for the way they have responded to that eight game losing run. It's not just Ryan and Filo that I'm pleased for, it's all of the lads, as they've rallied round together.

"Our win today has pulled in one or two other teams into the relegation dogfight. We will have to keep on our feet and try to get some more vital wins."

Glenn Roeder

I always expect Nobby to score. The way he scored penalties against West Ham and Liverpool, he put the ball in an area where it was unsaveable - this was saveable.

"Nobby is very upset because goals change games, and we were that much on top at that point that I have no doubt we would have gone on to win the game. It was a big turning point, and I am very annoyed we didn't get something from this match.

"I have seen it, and it's a nailed-on penalty. Sometimes you don't get those away from home, but there was nothing fortuitous about this one whatsoever.

I and the team are disappointed with the result. I thought our performances was as good as we have played away from home for a while, that was shown by the amount of chances we have created; the penalty is nailed on.

"If you analyse the whole game, Shay Given has had little to do. He made a good save from the deflected shot. We did concede a good goal, but we are dreadfully disappointed not to have won here.

"We have not taken chances we have created and have not made the most of the good positions we have got into. The second half was a poor spectacle, but you are not going to dominate a game for 90 minutes.

"We are hugely disappointed. The chances we had and the missed penalty, it should have been over at half-time."

Matt Jackson

"I thought the supporters were magnificent,. At times of adversity, we all come together, as a team, as a club and as supporters, and I thought the noise generated from the stands yesterday was fantastic. Newcastle have tremendous support as well and it was a terrific atmosphere to play football.

"We know there's still a long way to go, but the signs are excellent, it's not just the fact that we have started picking up points again, but the manner in which we have been doing so which is so encouraging.

Ryan Taylor celebrates his screamer
"The team is playing with so much confidence. I don't think the belief in ourselves has ever deserted us, even when we weren't winning games, but when you start winning, the self-belief naturally increases even more, and we will go into every match not just believing we can win, but expecting to win.

"Now we just have to focus on being right for Manchester City. We know that by winning, we can bring City closer to us in the table, which from our point of view is very important. The more teams down there the better!"

Ryan Taylor

"To be honest, as a group of players, we've always looked above us at who we can catch rather than down and what's happening below. That's just the nature of the way we are. We're just a point behind Sheffield United and Manchester City, who we play this Saturday, and we're two points behind Fulham, who we play at the JJB next.

"There's no reason why we can't start climbing the table if we carry on playing the way we are, because the team is full of belief. Ever since I've come back into the side, it hasn't been any different, and I can't comment on what went on before because I wasn't there.

"All I've seen is a group of players who get on, who have belief in themselves and who play with great quality and conviction. I've absolutely no doubt we'll survive, but we all want to do better than that. We're desperate to finish the season on a high.

"When you've been out for a year, to play any sort of game is a bonus. To have been in the team now for the past few games, and to score that goal was a fantastic moment for me, really really special, but it's gone now and all I want to do is focus on keeping this run going at Manchester City."
