Newcastle Reaction

"I thought it was a tremendous performance from the players, the only thing missing was a goal. That would have capped off a top class performance. We could have easily scored four or five goals tonight.

"That was a great performance against a team, who on paper, were at their strongest. Those lads have done themselves no end of good tonight.

"I thought the whole team was outstanding. We played good tempo, and good football and the only thing missing was goals.

"We changed our shape, we played with a diamond tonight and the players took to it really, really well. We carved Newcastle open at will.

"There was no pressure on us in a way because it was a cup game, but we ran them ragged! I think one-nil flattered them greatly."

Greame Souness

"We said in the dressing room before the game that it would be a battle out there, it would be a typical cup tie regardless of the team Wigan fielded.

"Some of our players didn't heed that warning. They didn't have their strongest side out but neither did we. However, I thought we still would have had enough to progress.

"We didn't start well at all and if we're honest we could have been three, four or five down by half-time. I'm so disappointed, some of the players did not do themselves justice.

"I thought maybe we could get the ball down and play football and make passes but we couldn't. I'm so disappointed, not just in the defeat but the manner of the defeat.

"We were a wee bit better in the second half, but I can take nothing from the game. It looked to be a harsh penalty but we cannot complain, they were better than us.

"I'm disappointed for the fans. Their support was magnificent and they deserve better. People pay a lot of money and make a lot of sacrifices to be here.

"We have to give them something to shout about - and we didn't tonight."

Shay Given

"You hope that when you make a save like that it can prove to be important, but when you've lost the game it doesn't matter.

"If we go on and win the game 1-0, then maybe you look back at a save like that and be pleased you've made a contribution.

"The fans deserve a special mention. They were fantastic. The amount of people that came down to support us was unbelievable, but we let them down and we didn't give them anything to shout about.

"We just weren't at the races all over the pitch. They were creating chances, and they were all over us. I thought in the first half we were terrible. It was as bad as it has been for as long as I can remember.

"We tried to address it at half time, and it probably got a bit better but it still wasn't anywhere near good enough. It's just a huge disappointment to go out of the cup, expecially when you look at the teams that are left in the competition.

"We weren't bothered about what team Wigan put out, we were more concerned about the way we played as a team. Obviously they made changes, but the players that came in for them were always going to want to prove a point to their manager that they should be playing more games.

"It wasn't a case of us underestimating them or anything like that. If you perform like we did, it doesn't matter who you play. Look at Doncaster beating Aston Villa the previous night.

"If you don't get your game right, then you will always end up disappointed no matter who you are playing against. If you aren't at the races then you are going to get punished, it's as simple as that.

"I didn't think it was a penalty to be honest. The lad was backing into Robbie, and the referee was quick to give it. The referee made his decision, and there's nothing we can do about it.

"But that doesn't alter the fact we were poor, I think it just summed up our night to be honest. We're just not playing well enough at the moment.

"I don't know if it's a confidence problem or not. I can only speak for myself and not the rest of the lads, but my confidence is fine. It's just a huge disappointment that we're not picking up the results, and all we can do is hope that it changes for us sooner rather than later."
