Middlesbrough Reaction: Latics lack killer instinct

Last updated : 05 October 2008 By Paul Farrington
It was certainly not deserved. Southgate's men were possibly dullest outfit to visit the JJB Stadium during its existence, and we've played in Division Two at this stadium.

However blame has to be placed squarely with the Latics players for this result.

Tony Cascarino put his neck on the block in the week saying that we have the potential to be top four material.

For that to be the case, the Latics players will have to develop a killer instinct and get two goals in front before slowing down.

Anyway, here's the reaction of the two managers.

Steve Bruce

Sometimes in football you don't get what you deserve. Other than the goal, I don't think the goalkeeper touched the ball, let alone make a save so we feel well and truly mugged.

We controlled the game from the start but sometimes these things happen. I thought the way Middlesbrough defended after the first half hour was a credit to them, their two centre backs had an outstanding game.

It had 0-0 written all over it. Once we didn't score in the first 30 minutes, Middlesbrough changed their shape to change their shape and they came up with that horrible suckerpunch at the end.

Gareth Southgate

We were excellent across the back five. It's the type of game where centre-halves get the opportunity to stand out and they certainly did that.

Our mentality going into the game was different and you could sense a determination about them. The irony is we've played much better football in our last two games and taken nothing.

We said we had to keep doing the right things which we did defensively, then take our chances when they come. We managed to finish one of them today and that was the important thing.

It was important for Jeremie to get off the mark and getting the winner is always special. Jeremie is always a threat but sometimes players don't have enough belief in themselves - they had that belief.
