Match Reaction: Bruce annoyed with lack of goals

Last Updated : 27-Apr-2009 by
Focussing his attention on Egyptian Amr Zaki, Steve Bruce has been annoyed with the lack of goals his side have scored since the new year.

It was no suprise that Rovers' goalkeeper Paul Robinson was given the man of the match award, but at the same time, the Latics lacked the killer instinct.

The normally sturdy defence was also a risk with Chris Kirkland looking very unsure under the long ball. His reluctance to come off his line for crosses adds pressure onto the defence and allows opposition sides to cross into the six yard area.

Here is the reaction of the two managers.

Steve Bruce

I've got no complaints. We spent all week talking about the threat they posed from set-pieces and then we've gone out and defended like that and got what we deserved.

We can't have that many opportunities and chances on goal and not take one at this level, no matter how well (Rovers goalkeeper) Paul Robinson played.

You don't have to be a rocket scientist to find out that that is the area in which we need to improve.
The reason we're in the top 10 is that Amr Zaki scored 10 goals by the end of October. He hasn't scored since.

Sam Allardyce

We've got to get one more win which shows you how difficult is is to get out of being in the bottom three in December. We've clawed our way out slowly and we've responded well.

It's a great show of character from the lads and a fantastic effort. The determination everybody showed really made a difference for us and it is great for us all to go home happy.
