Manchester City Reaction: Martinez pleased with passion

Here is the reaction of the two managers.

Roberto Martinez

I think we were the better side for the majority of the game and the performance was worthy of three points, and it's a little disappointing we didn't get the win.

On the other hand it was great to see certain signs that our performances are getting stronger. If we continue playing like this the results will come, I've no doubts over that.

There are many areas we still need to work on, but overall we stopped a very good Manchester City from being themselves, and imposed ourselves well.

I felt the quality of the play was very good, and with the calibre of players we had on the pitch, we knew that something could happen at any moment, which is exciting.

We played face-to-face against a side that spent a lot of money in the summer, which was a big compliment to Wigan Athletic and everyone connected with the club.

Every performance so far has brought positives, even the defeats. Sometimes it's important to look behind the score-line and analyse the performance.

Today, we maybe deserved to get all three points, but with the performances we're producing we'll soon get the results we deserve.

Time after time the players have shown they have a huge desire to play for this club, and the character they have gives us a lot.

It was a real team effort, and you could see the frustration on the faces of those players who didn't get on which is encouraging and creates a competitive feeling that we'll need over the course of the season.

Given the circumstances going down to 10-men it is always difficult but we stuck at it and we were disappointed to concede just before half-time because up till then I thought we looked quite comfortable in the first-half.

Obviously we got back on level terms and I thought we would go on to win the game but obviously the sending off changed our momentum.

But we stuck at it and weren't to be denied and got something out of the game that maybe last year we wouldn't have been able to.

I thought the first one was a little harsh both guys just clashed knees but the second one I don't think Pablo has touched the guy, the guy has hurdled his leg but obviously if your on a booking the likelihood if you go to ground is that you will get sent off and I can understand why he got sent off.

Next game

Next up for the Latics is the difficult trip to Burnley next weekend. Turf Moor is a difficult place to go as Burnley enjoy their return to the top flight. The Clarets will also be smarting after their defeat to Blackburn yesterday.
