Manchester City Reaction: Martinez lauds City stars

Manager Roberto Martinez was pleased with his sides display. Although there was plenty to work on the Spaniard highlighted a number of individual performances for special attention.

Speaking to the club's official website, Martinez said: "There were some impressive individual performances today and I was happy with the manner in which we never gave in or allowed Man City to run away with the game.

"Victor Moses looked dangerous in some one-on-one situations during the game, there was good movement from players such as Hugo Rodallega and Jordi Gomez when he came on and for Albert Crusat it will be an experience he will learn a lot from having played the final 30 minutes.

"You know when you play Man City that you are going to come under massive pressure with the quality they have in their ranks, but as a whole it's been a good lesson for us and I think it's also important that we come to places like this and compete with a determination to be perfect.

"During the game we showed some good flashes and there were plenty of examples of concepts we need to continue with, but we need to learn that unless we are perfect against such teams we won't get the breaks that will allow us to get the results - we have too much quality to settle for second best against any team."

Martinez was particularly impressed with the Tevez-Aguero-Silva combination for City as Aguero scored a hat-trick to seal the game. However he was more pleased with the character shown by the Latics to keep the scoreline respectable.

"The mentality of the group is phenomenal and I have so much belief in this squad that I push them to the maximum," added Martinez.

"The reality is that during the game we had to suffer defensively but coped with that pressure well, especially after being heavily punished so early in the game - that was not always the case in previous years when we perhaps did not have the same desire.

"We kept our composure after the opening goal, Ali made a fantastic penalty save and gradually we began to create openings at the other end of the pitch that on another day we may have got something out of.

"But overall, the competitive edge remains strong in the team which is a massive positive and I still belief that we can continue to improve as a young group - I want Wigan Athletic to carry on going around the Premier League being arrogant and aware of the things we have to do."

And finally, there was the debut appearances for Albert Crusat. Martinez has revealed that the Spanish winger was given the last 30 minutes as time to gain experience once the game was beyond the Latics.

"Once the game was out of our reach it was a unique experience for Albert to come into, I doubt there is a tougher physical test to come into than Man City away so he'll learn a lot from today.

"At times he was left unprotected by the referee in my opinion but that's something he'll learn about away from home.

"As for his performance I saw him enjoying his football, being arrogant and looked a real threat combining well with his team mates which is a great sign for the future," said the Latics boss.
