Manchester City Reaction

Before the manager's opinions, just a note for Orange Gareth who had the delight of two glasses full of orange poured over his lap in the Hospitality at Eastlands, who had spied that he was a Wigan fan.

It was all made better by the fact that he had money on the Latics to win 1-0 making a nice tidy sum from the game!

Anyway, here's the manager's thoughts on a massive win.

Paul Jewell

"His [Folan] £500,000 fee looks really good business and he's got two goals. If those goals help keep us in the Premiership then that's worth twenty times what we paid.

"I thought in the first half, we were outstanding, we took the game to Manchester City and caused them all sorts of problems. I was a little bit concerned that we didn't score a second goal. In the second half, we didn't play half as well, but we had battle and scrap. It's a big three points for us.

"You have to defend the goal with your life and the players did that today. We've got more resilience about us and now there is a lot more quality and confidence on the ball.

"Boyce is better at centre half than at right back, and he enjoys that role more, and Jackson is just a fantastic professional. He's great to have around the place as well even when he isn't playing. He might not be the quickest but he knows the game and very, very well, and doesn't let himself exposed because of his experience.

"Boyce has knocked on the ribs, Baines has got a kick on the back, Jackson's got a kick on the leg, and Taylor's got a knock too, so the whole back four has got something wrong with them! Emile Heskey was struggling in the second half as well. There were a lot of tired bodies out there and they battled away.

"There is still a long way to go because 32 points won't be enough to stay up although it is looking a lot healthier than it was three weeks ago."

Stuart Pearce

"Once again we are struggling to hit the net, we are creating chances, but the game today was won and lost in the first 20 minutes. Wigan looked like they were up for a fight and we were not, and that cost us dearly. It looked like only a matter of time before we conceded a goal, you could sniff that from the first two minutes.

"Once we went a goal behind, we played with a bit more vim and vigour but you cannot afford to do that. Quite often the first goal decides the game, and that was the case today, which was a huge disappointment. We showed more after the break, and we have got to do that until the end of the season.

"If you get beaten you can get booed, unless you show that you have had a right go. In the first 20 minutes we did not do that, which is why they are disappointed and why I am disappointed. We have got to dust ourselves down, and next week we have a massive game for this club.

"Like I said after the win at Sheffield United, between now and the summer we have a cup final in every match, it is as simple as that."
