Liverpool Reaction: Latics earn deserved point

Last updated : 14 February 2011 By Paul Farrington

Kenny Dalglish's men had won their last four games ahead of the weekend's fixture and they had the typical scouse swagger back into their football.

For the Latics to travel to Anfield and earn themselves a desserved point illustrates the quality that is now back from injury.

Charles N'Zogbia and Victor Moses were purring on the wings, with James McCarthy pulling the strings behind them.

The strength in depth of the side is now not an issue, Tom Cleverley, Franco Di Santo, Hendry Thomas and James McArthur were all on the bench.

Forget the fact that Blackpool are sinking, West Brom are in turmoil and West Ham look more concerned about a new stadium that what division they will be playing in. If the Latics can repeat displays like this from now until the end of the season, it should be enough to pull away from the bottom three.

Here is the reaction of the two managers.

Roberto Martinez

You have to be proud of the performance, especially at a place like Anfield where it is very difficult to play football. For large periods we were the better side, and we coped with their late pressure well.

I enjoyed watching the game and watching some magnificent performances throughout the team. It was disappointing to go 1-0 down given that Liverpool created very little, but we kept doing the right things and you always felt as though we could have the last say.

Their goal came as a surprise after the strong start we made and it's credit to the performance we produced that we did not deserve to be behind at the break.

The dressing room was disappointed at the break because we knew we were capable of producing more in the final third. That was a turning point, and in the second-half we had the understanding that if we stepped things up we could get the result.

It's a real achievement to come back in the manner we did against a team like Liverpool who are in a good moment of form. That belief is developing and so are the levels of performance and we need to make sure we continue going into games with a clear idea of how to win. That will determine our final league position.

Out wide we created a lot of problems for Liverpool and got our rewards after a few half-chances for Hugo Rodallega. The cross from Charles N'Zogbia was of great quality and we know how Steve Gohouri can be a threat in the final-third, again today he showed that with a fantastic finish.

To impose yourself like that at Anfield is a great sign of our development in a short-space of time. We played with real intelligence and created opportunities that isolated the Liverpool defence.

Kenny Dalglish

I think it was a game we started well enough. We pushed forward and scored a good goal with Raul again. Luis (Suarez) hit the post, but you could tell a lot of them had played Wednesday night.

There was just that little bit of an edge missing. If the edge had been there, the final pass would have been better. I think there were three or four occasions in the first half we would have been in, but the sharpness was just missing a bit, which is understandable.

Obviously we are disappointed not to take the three points and with a wee bit of luck maybe we would have, despite the performance not being as good as it has been in the past.

I think Wigan may have been a bit aggrieved if they had gone away without a point but Luis hit the post twice and their goal was offside - these things happen. We just have to brush ourselves down and get on with it. It's not been too damaging. We'll keep going.

The international fixtures took their toll, with Daniel Agger unfit and Raul spewing up at half-time. He had to come off just after that and of course, Steven (Gerrard) wasn't playing.

We had some players out but the most important ones are those that are on the pitch.
