Landzaat strike overshadowed by Dowd's incompetence

Paul Jewell: Dismayed
Here's what the manager's thought.

Paul Jewell

"I think the referee's decisions have cost us at least a point, if not then certainly all three. I thought the challenge on Emile Heskey was a stonewall penalty.

"He was through on goal so why would he want to go down? Mathieu Flamini put his arm on his shoulder, and Senderos got sent off for that last week.

"I would like to know where the inconsistency is with these guys because the only that is consistent is the inconsistency.

"I know they have a hard job, but we had Phil Dowd for our game with Arsenal last season and we were denied three stonewall penalties.

"For their first goal, one of players received treatment and he was ready to come back on, but Dowd wouldn't let him back on, and I think the other goal was offside.

"We showed great effort and determination and the players are disappointed as are the fans and we deserved something for the sheer guts we showed.

"The players showed tremendous guts, and showed terrific character and determination and if we take those into the remaining twelve games, we will be comfortable.

"We can't out play Arsenal, but we made them play long balls and we hit them on the counter attack, and for long periods, for all their pressure I don't think Chris Kirkland had too much to do.

"I feel sorry for the players because they have been robbed."

Arsene Wenger

"I felt it was deserved because we fought until the last second. They've shown again fantastic fighting spirit and character, but we played against a good Wigan side.

"In fairness, they could have won as well because they hit the post at 1-0 and after, there were one or two situations for us and for them that could have gone both ways.

"It was the kind of game that you have after an international break where it's always difficult to start. We had a sloppy start, and in fairness, Wigan have shown that they are quality because I was impressed by their performance today.

While commenting about the stone wall penalty on Emile Heskey in the second half, Wenger managed to mutter.

"It looked like he (the referee) couldn't give it, but I think there was maybe one on the other side as well. It's very difficult to say, the referee was close, he could have given a penalty or not. It's not for me to decide that, you know."
