Jewell: We need to kill the game at 2-0

"I thought in the first half we should have gone more than two goals in front, we had some really good opportunities, played some really good football. It was a bit of an open game, a bit too open really at two-nil. But we don't seem to be able to sit back and see the game out at the moment.

"Because we are always so positive, we are always going forward and at times we get a bit carried away with ourselves.

"Instead of slowing the game down, we try to score more goals, which is commendable, but at times it drives me daft. Certainly in the first half, and chances we created were a joy to watch, but two-nil should be enough to win any game.

"But if you can't defend set plays like we can't at the moment, you cannot always expect to score two goals in a match at this level. That's something we need to work on.

"Both debutants played an important part in the first goal and I am always pleased when my strikers score goals, especially new strikers, and it is a good start for the two lads.

"We should be able to break the game down and see it out when we are winning 2-0. From a critical point of view I'd like to see us close the game down better."

"To score a goal and get the winner is the perfect start for myself. I've been off a long time and I'm pleased that the gaffer has took a chance on me. I had quite a few offers but once I knew Paul Jewell was in for me I was very keen to come".

"We are all bitterly disappointed and very down but we feel for the fans. I feel exactly the same way as them and if I don't get results, I expect criticism. The fans are bound to show their frustration because we're testing everyone's patience.

"But we showed great strength of character to pull back from two down and that's the sort of character we're going to need more of to get out of this situation. If you can't defend you don't win football matches and defending is a real problem for us at the moment.

"We've always prided ourselves on our defensive record but at the moment it's not good enough and you can't hope to win matches if you concede the way we are. Individual mistakes are costing us.

"It's frustrating losing a match in the way we did but we are not feeling sorry for ourselves. Luck is going against us but I've said to the players, the harder you work the luckier you get.

"It's up to us to get ourselves out of this mess. There are still a lot of games to play but have to show character."
