"You have to take into consideration that that we didn't have a striker in the building. The first half wasn't very good from our point of view, but in the second half, we pushed them all the way.

"We showed more belief and although we were never going to create many chances because of our lack of strikers, but we pushed them all the way. It was never going to be a classic but I am proud of the players today.

"There was not too much quality from either side because of the difficult pitch. But we can't match them for quality, they're the Champions of Europe, but we can match them for endeavour and work rate, and we pushed them all the way.

"It's difficult for him [Scharner], as he normally plays centre half, and he ended up just trying to get around and knocking on flick-ons, and the team wasn't what I wanted it to be playing the best team in Europe.

"We can't carry the injuries and suspensions that we have at the moment, and expect to wipe teams out."

"Yes, this was an important win for us because recent results have not been good. It's also important in terms of our confidence and I think the players have today got their just desserts because they have worked very hard for it.

"It was a difficult game against a good team who played high tempo football. The pitch did not help and some of our players tired towards the end because of this. Sometimes it was a problem keeping the ball and passing it but it was the same for both sides.

"We were trying to play well and I think we were organised throughout. At the start of the second half Wigan pressed but we controlled most of the match. We showed character, our movement was good but at times our final pass let us down."
