Jewell reflects on the Wolves win

Jewell said: "It was a victory for hard work and determination and the players were almost out on their feet at the end as it's their fifth game in thirteen days. After losing the first three of those games I think questions were being asked but I think the players have answered the questions I asked of them over the last couple of games. It wasn't a brilliant performance, but it was brilliant as far as hard work and determination were concerned.

"I think they had two chances in the game, both in the first half. One just after we scored, and another time when John Filan made a great save. Other than that I thought they had plenty of the ball but that we shuffled across and made them go where we wanted them to go and I thought we were excellent defensively.

"I thought the Duke and Jason Roberts led the line exceptionally well tonight and were difficult to play against, and as a team I thought it was a great hard working performance especially after losing those first three games thirteen days ago. I think it spoke volumes for the players characters and their determination.

"I think Gareth Whalley has been outstanding since coming into the team, he's been on song. In the year we got promotion at Bradford, he never got man of the match, he never got us champagne, but he got the Player's Player of the Year Award come the end of the season. He doesn't look for the difficult ball, he's a very intelligent footballer and he likes to play the simple ball. He's gone in there and he's done exceptionally well. He has been patient waiting for his chance here and at the moment he's got the shirt. Whoever gets the shirt, it's theirs to lose.

"I'm glad we've got the FA Cup on Saturday, because it's a bit of a breather from the League. The players will have a day off so they can get rested up because we will need everybody firing on all cylinders to achieve the holy grail. Five games in thirteen days has taken its toll on the players so I think I will freshen things up a little at Derby."
