Jewell: I think their goal woke us up a little bit

"I have to give my team great credit considering the way we had to settle today, Mellor only just passed a fitness test this morning, he wasn't fit really. So we didn't have any fit strikers.

"I played five in midfield and that doesn't really suit us, but we kept going and without really ever looking like scoring.

"I think their goal woke us up a little bit. We looked more positive after they scored, we had to be more resolute and strong, and it is a point for character and hard work, honesty and a little bit of fortune.

"I think we finished the game stronger than them. We put them under a bit of pressure, and all of a sudden we looked like we believed we could score another goal.

"It wasn't a great performance by us, it was a scrappy game, it was disjointed, and when we normally do that this season, we've lost games.

"In the last two games we haven't been anywhere near our best but we've got two points out of them."

The Latics boss was also pleased to see Johansson bag the equaliser. He added: "I'm pleased and hopefully it won't be his last goal in the Premiership. It was a good strikers finish."

But PJ is a little disappointed to be without Pascal Chimbonda for the visit of Liverpool next week. The full-back picked up his fifth booking of the season. Jewell continued: "I suppose Pascal can play without fear now (of suspension in for the Carling Cup final), but he's disappointed to miss the Liverpool game now, because he doesn't want to miss any matches."

The player himself threw himself to the floor in disappointment when Steve Bennett pulled out the card.

"It wasn't a foul as far as we are concerned but we should have defended it better. It wasn't a great first shot.

"But the players in the wall didn't do their job properly and Jussi couldn't push it to one side. It was disappointing but the squad put in a tremendous effort considering the number of players we are without.

"We managed to take the game to Wigan as best we possibly and got our noses in front. I just hoped for their benefit we could have won this game 1-0, having just slipped up at Portsmouth.

"It was a spirited show from us against Wigan after a very good start. But fatigue did set in again and that's why we have drawn two instead of winning the last two matches."
