Jewell: I felt we deserved more than that

"I am disappointed with the result although I am very happy with the performance but I felt we deserved more than that.

"In the first twenty minutes we looked edgy and a little disjointed, but after that I thought we were the better side although they scored when we were having our best period.

"Once we scored, we had set pieces, we had two chances cleared off the line, and we hit the post, and their 'keeper made a great save and we arguably could have had a penalty, so there are plenty of positives to come out of this.

"We looked like we could score goals, whereas last year we lacked that. In the second half we looked dangerous and once we scored the goal, I thought they were hanging on a bit.

"However, we made a mistake in the middle of the park and we end up having to pick the up from the back of the net which was disappointing.

"It was a difficult pitch, although it was the same for both sides. It was unusual to have so much rain on the first day of the season, but both sets of players equipped themselves well.

"It's not an easy place to come and play here at St. James' Park but I thought we more than matched them on the pitch."

Glenn Roeder (Newcastle Boss)

"It's a good three points and overall we deserved it, even though Wigan made it difficult. I'm very pleased with the win - on the opening day of the season, anyone would be."

"It was important that we got back into the game quickly after they equalised."

Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder was clearly watching a different game as the Latics deserved at least a draw after bossing the game for large periods.

The chances were also there for the Latics to win it. Despite missing these chances, it was nice to see them being created, we didn't create this many at St James' last season.

Henri Camara
The referee was terrible, he just wasn't able to book anyone in a black and white shite, but enjoyed showing yellow to the Latics. Another case of big club syndrome unfortunately.

I was disappointed with Paul Scharner for the Toon's opener. It was pointed out here last season that the Austrian is a poor man-marker and he watches the ball too much, maybe a reason behind his switch to midfield.

He was at fault for Parker's headed goal. Scharner was too busy looking at the ball as Parker got in behind him to head Newcastle in front. Mistakes are costly at the top.

There is also slight blame being placed on Chris Kirlkand for not palming N'Zogbia's shot away for a corner, but this seems a little harsh.

Not to dwell on two slight negatives however. This was a very positive performance on a difficult pitch against quality opposition.

The side seems to have a good balance to it, and if we can keep creating as many chances at we did at St James' on Saturday, the Latics will have no troubles this season.

Meanwhile, Henri Camara has started the season the way he was in pre-season. His determination and form have really been impressive recently, he was a real threat to Newcastle all afternoon.
