Jewell: Arry and Jacko will miss the rest of season

Both players left the field in the first half injured. Matt Jackson suffering a knee injury after a brilliant headed clearance to deny Shola Ameobi a certain goal, while captain De Zeeuw suffered a broken collar bone after a terrible challenge on him.

Latics boss Paul Jewell reflects on Uriah Rennie's refereeing talents

"To have injuries to both centre backs within a minute of each other, we just didn't recover from that. We started the game quite well, and got a goal in front and could have had another one.

"It was just too much to expect us to lose two members of our defence and expect us to win the game, it was just too much for us. It was quite an open game and we had a couple of chances, and we had a good chance through Lee McCulloch to go two-nil up. We changed the shape of the team and we looked quite comfortable, knocking the ball around quite well, but because of the injuries it was just too much to ask of us.

"You can make one or two changes, but when you are talking three or four you are always going to be up against it and it wasn't going to happen for us. Arjan De Zeeuw has done his collar bone, and Jacko has taken some damage to his knee, and Lee McCulloch's ill. I wouldn't have thought 'Arry [De Zeeuw] or Jacko will be available on Tuesday night, if at all for the rest of the season.

"I am disappointed in the manner of the goals, the first one is when the linesman gave it [Shearer penalty], the second was a free header from a corner [Titus Bramble], and for the third one we had a throw-in and we gave it away, and ten seconds later the games over.

"After the penalty we were always going to be chasing, and they got a foothold in the game, and Shearer just had too much of our makeshift centre halves."

Kieron Dyer

"It is a quite a surprising statistic to learn that the last time we came back to win a league game from being a goal behind was almost two years ago, but it shows the spirit in the side. I don't think it was a bad start, even though we were a goal down after five minutes or so.

"I had a chance and Shola had a chance, but when you get beaten by an unbelievable free kick like that there's not a lot you can do about it. We had a good response, and we thoroughly deserved the three points."

"I'm very pleased for many reasons, but two particularly. One is that that is the first time that we've come back from a goal down for a long, long time so we should gain confidence from that.

">"And Wigan had not been beaten away from home for a long time. We gave them a goal start but beat them well. And we haven't just scored from our only three chances - we've had a few, while Shay's had a relatively quiet afternoon."

Titus Bramble

"I'm not really known for my goals, but it was nice to get one and help us get the three points. It was a great delivery from Nobby with the corner, and when Alan took two markers with him it left me in space and I couldn't really miss.

"That goal put us back in front, and we were always confident we wouldn't let that lead go after that. We have been criticised in the past for rolling over when we fall behind, but that certainly wasn't the case on Saturday.

"We were disappointed to go behind but there's not much you can do with a free kick like that. We kept our heads though, and we always believed we could come back and win it.

"At half time we were in a good position at 2-1 up, and we knew the first goal of the second half was going to be vital. Thankfully it went our way, and once Alan got the third one we got a bit of leeway and were always comfortable."
