Hull City Reaction: Bruce delighted with Zaki brace

Here is the reaction of the two managers.

Steve Bruce

We're only three games in of course but, arguably, it's the worst we've played, it sounds stupid enough but it is. We got off to a great start and then we got the second one and I said at half-time that the first 20 minutes would be vital, if they get one back then it could be a tough afternoon.

It was difficult coming here, make no mistake about that. We thought it was going to be as hard as it was going to be. Even after 20 minutes when we had scored two, they were really up for it. The crowd is going to be vital for them, I've been involved with teams that come up and he (Brown) has got some decent players.

I thought the outstanding player on the pitch was Valencia, he had a fantastic match. Zaki is doing what we thought he could do and all those trips to Cairo have proved worthwhile. We hope that we've unearthed one there and we hope he keeps doing what he does, which would be fantastic for us.

Phil Brown

Wigan have had five shots on target and beaten us 5-0. That is a tough one for us to swallow. I ask myself was that the gulf in class? The answer to that is no. At half time, Hull City were beating Hull City. We slipped up at a set-piece and it was a little bit of detail that was the difference between the two clubs.

At times, I was pleased with the chances that came our way. Craig Fagan had a chance early on and I don't know what it feels like to go 1-0 up yet. Had that happened, it might have been a different game.

But I can't accept the defending for the first goal and I can't accept our defending when we're taking a corner. I was always of the opinion that, regardless of today's result, a couple of weeks' break would benefit us. The players need a rest and they'll go away for four or five days of rest.

It's the same for me. I'll go away and lay on a beach somewhere, hopefully with my phone turned off because the transfer window will have closed. I think we'll all be better for that rest come the Newcastle game in a fortnight.
