"We always thought we would do enough to stay up, although we still have a little bit to do to ensure we are still in the Premiership next season. We thought at this time of year we would be in or around the bottom five or six of the table.

"If you had offered us 17th place before a ball was kicked, we would have taken it and had the biggest party ever seen. We have done exceptionally well. We have proved to ourselves that we can do it. We don't want to get too carried away but I think we've shut a few people up.

"Half of our supporters haven't got here tonight because of accidents on the M6, so they deserve great credit even thought they've missed watching a great victory although we never hit dizzy heights.

"It was a professional performance, West Ham came and changed their shape and put five in midfield. We scored two goals, and we could have scored before then anyway. But our back four and our midfield have also worked exceptionally hard. Without it being pretty, it was a great professional performance.

"Our strikers are always going to be a handful because they've got pace, and Jason is strong as well as being skilful. The lads up front always take the credit and the hardest thing to do in football is to score goals, but it was a real team effort and we were solid from back to front."

"I certainly did not expect a performance like that in the first half. We set the team up to make sure we were strong and were looking for a clean sheet tonight, but in the first 20 minutes, we looked vulnerable and did not look like we were offering too much of an offensive threat either, so I changed it.

"But it did not get any better and then it was scratching your head time really because the set of players we have had, they have been brilliant. For the first time, we have gifted a performance to the opposition.

"Wigan are a good team, but have not had to play to their maximum tonight. That was one of our goals at the start of the season and unfortunately we have let that slip. It was kids for a quid tonight - and I think they paid too much to be honest."
