Fulham Reaction: Martinez has no excuses

Last updated : 31 October 2010 By Paul Farrington

Here is the reaction of the two managers.

Roberto Martinez

It was our worst performance of the season, and that is disappointing. There are a few reasons for that, such as the extra game on Tuesday, but we were flat from the start.

We made a few changes but we just didn't have the energy you need to be able to compete in the Premier League away from home. Defensively we weren't strong enough to hold off their pressure, and we didn't create nearly enough problems to upset Fulham.

The way we like to play, we want to be brave on the front foot, but when you are lacking tempo it's impossible to do that. We couldn't match Fulham in any department.

When you are tired, you can't make the decisions you normally can, and we weren't the team we know we can be on the ball. Fulham were worthy winners, and it's a performance we need to eradicate as quickly as possible, and make sure it doesn't happen again.

Stopping the cross coming in is a must when you come to Fulham, and we didn't do that. It's something we have not seen from us this season, and we can't see it again.

We always knew that two goals were going to be a lot to pull back, but I felt if we could start the second half well and maybe get the next goal, the whole game would change.

But we had nothing to offer, and it puts an end to our unbeaten run. What we need to do now is put it out of our heads and get ready for Saturday and hopefully start off another run.

Mark Hughes

I'm delighted. We've played well this season and, today, I thought certainly in the first half, it was the best we've produced all year. That's saying something because we've played well this year so I was delighted with going in 2-0 to the good and we were good value for that in fairness.

In the second half Wigan tried to ask more questions of us but in fairness we were quite comfortable and Mark Schwarzer has had very little to do today.

So, I just thought our intensity to outplay and our real intention and the way we took the initiative in the game was there for everybody to see and we fully deserved the win today. We have great movement, we've got a lot of rotation in forward areas.

What we wanted to do today was to play in the opposition half. Sometimes we've been guilty of conceding a little bit of ground and having too much to do going forward but today we played the vast majority of the game in Wigan's half and they found it very difficult.
