Everton Reaction: Toffees took their chances

With no recognised left back on the field and goals in short supply, it was always going to be a difficult day for the Latics. It was pleasing to see the Latics boss speak of new additions, with a left back and striker desperately needed if a successful season is to be forthcoming.

But perhaps more pleasing was the fact that aside from the forward and left back troubles, the large majority of the squad turned in pleasing displays. Here's the manager's reactions.

Hutchings: It wasn't to be
Chris Hutchings

"We went behind to what we thought was a lucky goal, but they all count. Then we had our best spell of the game, but we allowed Andy Johnson to turn and you cannot allow that in the box, and he sets it up for a tap. Sibierski got us back in the game, and we had a couple of chances but it just wasn't to be.

"Goodison Park is always a tough place to visit, and it takes time for a team to gel but I thought the new boys did well. I was pleased with our effort today, and there are lots of positives to take today but we weren't happy with the goals we conceded and we have to work on that.

"Jason Koumas has fantastic quality, he will have you at the edge of your seat and Sibierski can bring other people into play and he links the play very well for us. I also thought Andreas Granqvist defended very well too.

"We've already got seven new faces, although we are always looking to improve and if the right players are available then hopefully we can get one or two before the transfer window shuts.

"We have to give credit to Everton, as they took their chances and we didn't. Now we must look forward to Wednesday's game against Middlesbrough."

David Moyes

"I didn't realise it was my 200th league game until somebody told me just before kick off. It is good to think I have been in chagre for 200 Premier League games. A lot of Premier League managers don't get that opportunity so I'm grateful I've had it. And to be manager here for five-and-a-half years is an achievement I believe.

"I thought we played well today and apart from the last five or 10 minutes we always looked like winning. We did miss a few chances and it could have cost us but thankfully it didn't. I thought Victor Anichebe played very well today - he is a young boy and he tired a little in the heat.

"It was quite difficult for him but in the first half he was a real handful and I thought he deserved to score. Hopefully that will help with his confidence and this is a chance for him."
