Doncaster Reaction: Coyle pleased with comeback

The new Latics boss was clearly trying the patience of the home fans in the first half by adopting an isolated lone striker in Grant Holt, and leaving Shaun Maloney on the right flank, a position where he is ineffective.

The second half was a different story as Maloney satarted to operate more centrally and the presence of a second forward, Marc Antone-Fortune, caused Doncaster no end of problems.

Hopefully Coyle has learned from this mistake but either way he was pleased with the comeback. Speaking to the club's official website he said: "There's no doubt we could and should have won the game.

"But any team that goes in two goals down at half-time will take a point and that's what we managed to do.

"I thought we started the game really well, although I was disappointed with the way we responded to going behind.

"Any team can concede a goal - whether it's a 'worldie' or a bad mistake - and you have to maintain that belief that what you're doing is right.

"We needed to put it right, and we did that at half-time.

"We changed things, we went with two strikers and were far more purposeful, and the response from both the players and also the fans was magnificent.

"It takes more than one set of tools to get the job done.

"In your golf bag, you have a set of irons and you need to know how to use them all."

Next up for the Latics is the visit of Middlesbrough to the DW Stadium on Sunday afternoon at 3pm.

The game has been moved back 24 hours to allow supporters of both the Latics and the Wigan Warriors to see the latter's Challenge Cup Final against Hull FC on Saturday afternoon.
