Community Shield Reaction: Coyle rues slow start

The former Bolton and Burnley boss was hopwever pleased with many aspects of the Wigan performance despite going down 2-0 to David Moyes' men.

Speaking after the game to the official website, Coyle said: “The only disappointment from today was the scoreline. If truth be told, we started the game a little slowly and conceding the opening goal from a world-class header, but after that we really grew into the game, had a couple of good opportunities and made Manchester United chase the ball in phases.

“The second goal came in what I felt was our best spell in the game; it was a half-hit shot that deflected past Scott Carson and into the back of the net from Man Utd’s first attack of the half.

“Overall, the lads stuck to their task, we were able to use all six substitutes and give plenty of the players game-time and whilst it was great to be a part of this occasion, one we felt at times we had a real chance of winning, the test will stand us in good stead for next weekend’s trip to Bournemouth.

“We’ll have no problem lifting people once more for the game at Dean Court; between now and then a lot of players will be heading off on international duties which shows the quality and strength in depth we have at the club, and they’ll be pushing one another for a place in the team once they’ve all returned.”

Next up for the Latics is a bump back to planet earth with a trip to Dean Court to face Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon.
