"Their first goal was a kick in the teeth for us, but we bounced back and showed great character and at times looked really, really dangerous on the break. We could have scored two or three more goals.

"I thought at 3-1 we were smashing, and Pollitt's kept us in it, he made three or four unbelievable saves. We then got the fourth against the run of play and the game should have been over then with fifteen minutes to go.

"We started doing the wrong things in the wrong areas and we nearly paid the price. We knew City would come back and I think they should take an enormous amount of credit for the way they came out in the second half, they never threw in the towel.

"But it just shows you can't afford to take your foot off the gas at this level because you can get punished, and we almost did today. it was a great game of football, loads of mistakes, loads of good attacking play, honest players. But we should have been a bit more professional when we were 4-1 up.

"The players should take credit for their achievement for today, but they can't take liberties in the Premier League. With fifteen minutes to go we could've made the game ugly as long as we win it. Fair enough we won it, but we should have done so more comfortably."

Stuart Pearce

"For a defender of 25 years it was a horror show. Their forwards caused us havoc, but we created some of our own problems at the back. If you defend like that you don't deserve to win.

"On today's performance their front two were world-beaters, but we had a great deal to do with that. They are a handful, they have got pace and power and they can finish.

"We have got our own pace and power and we've got enough to handle most teams, but individual errors have cost us dearly.

"I will watch the tape, but we don't have much time before the Chelsea game to work on things. But I looked into the eyes of one or two at the end and they know they owe me. These are an honest bunch of players but their performances were not good enough."

Graham Kavanagh

"We got the breaks at the right times and we got the goals. We got a goal before half-time which gave them a lot of confidence. We have started a run of four games but to start it off with a win is fantastic.

"We have got back to what we are good at, getting into people's faces, we compete all over the park, and we get the ball into areas where Henri Camara and Jason Roberts can cause damage.

"The two lads got their goals very well and Lee McCulloch got a great header so we're all very pleased.

"We went a goal down and it wasn't great defending, but we rolled our sleeves up and got back in it and even at 1-0 down we felt we could win the game and that's a good sign and it should give us confidence going into Wednesday's game.

"People talk about teams having character and I think we certainly have that in abundance. There is a tremendous belief and a willingness to work hard and all that stems down from the manager who expects that from us.

"He expects that from us no matter how good or bad we play. We have to give our all in terms of attitude, desire and will to win."
