A dubious free-kick decision in the opening minutes of the game proved to be the difference with Deco's quality strike the only meaningful attempt on goal from the Blues.

In my eyes, yes, we did enough. I think most people who witnessed it would say that too.
But they have given everything. When you play these big teams sometimes you have to ride your luck. We didn't have to do that today because we played well against them.
When you analyse it, our goalkeeper didn't have a save to make. That's almost unheard of against Chelsea and they will go away thinking 'we nicked that one'.
We had an outstanding chance to beat them today and at no stage did they look like they would rip us apart like they did Portsmouth.

This was my first test outside Stamford Bridge and now I know what to expect. I saw today out in the field how difficult it is and over the last two or three years, when a team goes and wins one-nil, it's the same as 10-nil. That's because one-nil in England is 50 per cent of the scorelines.
In England you can never say first versus the last is easy. This is my first time in the north of England. Now I know the north and where to come when I play Manchester United, Manchester City, Bolton and the rest.
This result is fantastic for Chelsea because we have more confidence and we have six points, even though I know we didn't play well. Wigan have powerful players.

Next up for the Latics is Tuesday's clash with Notts County at the JJB Stadium. Steve Bruce ios likely to field a weakened side but the Magpies shouldn't be un-estimated as they have already beaten Championship opposition to make the second round.
