Burnley Reaction: Martinez delighted with victory

Last updated : 25 October 2009 By Paul Farrington
It showed good character from the Latics to come from behind, particularly given the early nature of the Burnley opener.

With games against Portsmouth, Sunderland, Birmingham and Fulham coming up, the Latics could really press on now and make a charge up the table. The next month or so is a very important time for the squad.

The major down side of the day was the injury suffered by Maynor Figueroa who is likely to be out for at least eight weeks after a garde two tear in the medial ligament of his left knee. All the best goes to Maynor for a speedy recovery.

Here is the reaction of the two managers.

Roberto Martinez

I think the performance was well worthy of the three points, which shows the consistency we're finding in our play. We said before the game how difficult it was going to be coming to Turf Moor and playing against a Burnley side full of confidence with a great home record.

We didn't come here to be defensive or stop them from playing and hope for a result. What pleased me most was how we learned from our mistakes after going behind early on, and from there on we took control of our performance and the game.

It was a real test of character today, something we haven't really had since playing Manchester Utd. We've got great characters in the team with strong mentalities which showed today, and that's going to be vital over the course of the season.

That kind of attitude will win you many points through the season and make the fans very proud of their team. They were a huge force behind us today and everybody showed be very proud of the players for giving such an outstanding performance.

It's a big step to go away from home and re-produce that kind of form, and it indicates another significant step forward for us.

Owen Coyle

It's always disappointing to lose matches but given everything we offered to the match then yeah, doubly disappointed. We created numerous opportunities (and) were in the ascendancy when we lost our second goal.

Even then the reaction was fantastic and we had numerous opportunities to get back in it at two each and we switched off at a set-play.

It's hurtful to take there's no doubt about it because, as I say, I felt there were large periods of the game that we dominated, some terrific football resulting in real goalscoring chances.
