Bolton Reaction: Martinez happy with performance

Last updated : 24 October 2010 By Paul Farrington

Both clubs could arguably have won the game, but both managers seemed ot be content to take a point after a hard faught draw.

Here is the reaction of the two managers.

Roberto Martinez

The first 20 minutes was typical derby stuff, and that really affected both sides a little bit. We finished the first half very strongly, and I was very, very pleased with the way we played in the second half.

I don't feel the result reflects the dominance we had and the amount of chances we created, but that will come with work and with time. We had the momentum at the end of the first half, especially down both flanks, which was very pleasing.

I don't think I've seen so many open chances created, and if Hugo (Rodallega) had put away that header it would have capped off a perfect performance with three points.

If we had have managed to get a second goal, it was one of those games where we could have really kicked on. We controlled the threats of Bolton very well and it was a shame they got the equaliser because it was such a scrappy goal.

The goal [Rodallega] was real quality. The players are gelling together and I really couldn't see Bolton getting back into the game. I am sure the fans will have appreciated the way we played.

Credit to them, they have great experience and know how to grind out results, but they only had three shots in the whole game which shows how well we played. I always say performances aren't always reflected in score-lines, and I still choose performances over the score-line at the moment.

Owen Coyle

Ultimately we went behind to a goal that was clearly two yards offside. I felt that at the time. I've seen it back and when Di Santo picks up the ball he's two yards offside. He plays a great ball for Rodallega to finish, but that should be stopped at source as he's offside.

At that point it would be easy to feel sorry for yourself having put so much into the game and find yourself 1-0 to another huge decision against us. This group of players with the spirit they have in each other they picked themselves up and got a deserved equaliser.

For the last part of the game both teams tried to win the game. We always knew that Wigan would be dangerous.

For the first half hour it looked as if we were the home team. We really did boss the game for those 30 minutes. We looked powerful. From my position it looked like an inocuous challenge with Fabrice looking to close the ball down. I hope James is alright.

Next game

Next up for the Latics is the visit of Swansea City to the DW Stadium on Tuesday for the Carling Cup tie. Given the level of hype coming from Wales, the game amounts to a cup final for the Swans who are set to bring a big following. Martinez on the other hand will be hoping to put one over his former club.
