Jewell masterminded a third win on the bounce
Paul Jewell

"Today we knew we had to come here and battle, they've beaten Liverpool and Spurs here this season. Bolton have their style and are very physical, and that's fine, we had to match that and I felt we did, although it was never going to be a great match.

"I don't think they had a shot on target, and as a defensive unit, it was a great display from us. As a match it wasn't great, but you can't always play great football.

"There was a lot of disruption during the first half and I think the team deserves great credit for getting on with it.

"We have worked exceptionally hard on the training ground with the back four, and three weeks ago we might have lost here. We've got that steely determination about us back, and our confidence is back.

"Bolton are a very good team, but today I think all the plaudits should be awarded to my team. Lee [McCulloch] has been an integral part of our team for years, and he hasn't been in the starting line-up recently but it was a really good goal and I am delighted for him.

"This result is nice for the team, because three consecutive clean sheets in the Premiership is very hard to obtain. We have to use this now to take it into our home game next week."

Sam Allardyce

"When you miss a golden chance in the first few minutes it is critical that the chance is taken in the Premiership. We were all praying that Nicolas would have put that one in but I suppose he is struggling with his goalscoring ability at the moment and I am sure it will come soon. But it was a crucial time for us to be one up and it would have made life a lot easier for us.

"Then of course the 'offside goal' which should have been a goal has cost us. Sometimes they go for you and sometimes they go against you.

"I think we paid a very heavy price in the end because I thought there was very little between the two sides. We gave away a silly goal towards the end of the match that we really shouldn't have given away. Two of our mistakes and one from the officials have cost us three points."

Wasn't it a disgusting challenge from Kevin Davies on Chris Kirkland?

Many will argue that you need your arms to jump but it was clear that the Bolton striker's intent was to hurt the England international goalkeeper.

Emile Heskey clearly thinks the challenge from Davies is nasty
Davies jumped with his left arm and elbow ailing in the direction of Kirkland's face and could so easily have caused harm to the goalkeeper who needed treatment after the incident.

The Bolton strikers gets away with challenges like this week after week with no recrimination for his actions from referees or the F.A. Is it not possible for the governing body to pull the incident back and announce punishment for the forward?

Surely at least a warning as to his future conduct should be dishsed out.

Aside from the typical Bolton diving and long-ball play the game was average. The Latics played as well as was needed on the day and dealt well with Bolton's predictable attacking.

One-or-two breaks got through the defence but were let down by poor finishing from the poor mans Thierry Henry, Nicolas Anelka. Stelios had a good goal ruled out - which gave Allardyce plenty to whinge about - but it was the same for the Latics last week at Fulham.

The difference is we have the ability to score freely at the moment, while Bolton clearly missed Kevin Nolan in the middle of the field.

It would appear that the Latics have the upper hand against Bolton with results over the past two seasons going in Wigan's favour. To reverse the trend, Allardyce and his staff need to understand that on their rise through the league's, the Latics have come up against sides that play a better long ball game than this current Bolton side.

And it leaves just one thing to add, thank you for the three points again, we'll see you next year.
