Blackpool Reaction

Last updated : 03 February 2002 By Paul Farrington
Speaking after the game, Jewell said “It was very very disappointing. We didn't have the mental or physical strength or the desire to win the game. That was the disappointing thing. Nobody likes to lose but there's a way of losing.
“I used the excuse that we had a bad day at the office against Reading but that's two defeats from three games now and, without being too down about it, it's not good enough.
“We had one or two decent chances, with the ball flashing across the face of the box a few times. But we haven't had anyone all season who was capable of sticking the ball in the back of the net from six yards.
“Gary Teale twisted his ankle after we had used all our subs but there was nothing we could do about that. We had a little bit of invention late on but it wasn't enough.
“I don't want to talk about relegation but if we put in 15 or 16 more performances like that, we will have to. The supporters will put up with defeats but what they won't take are poor performances like that. Mentally and physically, they were stronger than us.
“I think it was down to courage. We have good players here but good players should put in hard work in abundance. We have to look at ourselves and say we weren't good enough. It just wasn't acceptable.
“Lee McCulloch had a back spasm yesterday and he had a bad back today, so that's why Simon Haworth was in the squad. We also had to bring in young Paul Santus on the bench but that's not why we lost.
“That's the third time we have lost against Blackpool this season and that's hard to take. It will be a long hard week in training and hopefully we can bounce back with a win at Wrexham next week. Hopefully Jason De Vos will be back from Gold Cup duty then and we are hoping Matt Jackson will be back in training as well.
“I'm not going to rule us out of the play-offs but that really wasn't play-off form. Let's be honest! We have had two kicks in the teeth with two defeats from our last couple of home games.
“I think I know where the problem lies. This hasn't happened overnight. As I have said all along, we are getting better gradually but we have taken a couple of steps back tonight.”
