Rovers had taken the lead when Spurr netted for the away side. However following Grant Hanley's red card mid-way through the first half the game turned in favour of the Latics.

It was subsitute duo of Grant Holt, making his return from a knee injury, and Emmerson Boyce who fired the Latics from behind and into the lead to come away with all three points.

In the spirit of the town Coyle remarked that the Latics showed the same comeback spirit as the Warriors as he told the Wigan Evening Post: “We all watched the rugby on Saturday night and it was inspirational when you saw their comeback.

“We’ve also shown that on the football side this year, with the amount of points we’ve retrieved from losing positions.

“It tells you everything about the character and the spirit you’ve got at your club.

“People will always talk when they’re winning games about how good the spirit is – that comes hand in hand.

“But the testimony to any team spirit and camaraderie is when your team is up against it.

“You saw it on Saturday night in the rugby league, that comeback was amazing.

“And again our lads showed a lot of good attributes there that really pleased me.”

The Latics now have a week off for the international break before facing local rivals Blackpool at Bloomfield Road on the 19th.
