The return of Ivan Ramis to the first team following his injury was instrumental as the Spaniard netted the opening goal after just two minutes.

However it was more than just a solo display with the return to form of the whole first eleven, with a performance that hinted at the form so eminent at the end of last season.

Speaking about the victory Latics boss Roberto Martinez told the club's official website: “What pleased me was that we were able to maintain the good aspects of our performances in recent weeks, which was the biggest challenge we faced at the start of the day.

“After that we needed to show that we could be better in both penalty areas; we got the first goal which is always so significant in these kinds of games and to keep a clean sheet gave extra meaning to the result.

“Replicating certain standards was important and players coming into the team gave us a real freshness and highlighted the competition for places we had at the beginning of the season and what we’re getting back now.

“So it was a complete performance with certain individuals producing big displays personally and I hope the fans, who have been magnificent throughout our tough spell, certainly enjoyed it.”

Next up for the Latics is the visit of Manchester United on New Year's Day as Roberto Martinez and his team will look to build on a result that has pushed the club out of the bottom three.
