Arsenal Reaction: Latics defeated by youthful Gunners

Last updated : 12 November 2008 By Paul Farrington
Such a display certainly begs the question whether the present Wigan Athletic youth set up is adequate for the clubs stature in the Premiership.

Anyway, more on that later. Here is the reaction of the two managers.

Steve Bruce

I am not going to make excuses, even though three or four of our players are under the weather. We simply didn't make it a cup-tie. We gave them time and space and freedom to enjoy themselves.

I thought we should have had a penalty for handball and if we had made it 1-1, it might have been different but I am not going to make excuses.

They were frightening on the night. Arsene says it is the best crop of youngsters he's had and when you think of the young players they have had in the past, that is some compliment.

They gave us a torrid evening. We've gone out of the cup with a whimper really. They created more chances against us than any other team this season.

We've had our backsides kicked by a very good young Arsenal team.

Arsene Wenger

I enjoyed every minute of it because it was a big test for such a young team with many under-18 players involved.

I believe we stood up to the test and it was a remarkable combination of desire, energy and quality. From the first to the last minute we looked up for it and were relentless in having a go at Wigan. In the end it was a fantastic win.

I believe, on the players you have seen tonight, England has a competitive future.

You have Gavin Hoyte, who for me had an outstanding game, Kieran Gibbs, Mark Randall, Jack Wilshere - all four are top class. Also there is Jay Simpson, Henri Lansbury, Emmanuel Frimpong and Abu Ogogo.
