Arsenal Reaction: Depressing Latics give second seaside show

Last updated : 20 September 2009 By Paul Farrington
Yet again the attacking threat was non-existant, but further to that the lack of determination and desire from a number of players is a serious concern.

The soft underbelly of the side has resulted in a less than pleasing goals against column so far this term.

Only the opening day victory over Aston Villa could be described as anything of a good performance from the side.

Martinez is starting to lose supporters as they see their side slipping ominously the wrong way down the table and this wonderful passing football that we are now supposed to be playing has only yielded a lazy uncompetitive pair of players in Jordi Gomez and Jason Koumas. It's like playing with nine men having those two on the field.

From a personal point of view, Scharner needs to be in the first eleven in replace of Gomez. A sad state of affairs that a centre back would be a better attacking threat that our so called playmaker.

Jason Scotland also needs to be playing up front as Jason Koumas is embarrassing in his every game stroll up and down the left flank.

Anyway, another tonking for the Latics is going to do little to win over supporters, particularly those who are now saving their money and staying away from homes game.

Hhere is the reaction of the two managers.

Roberto Martinez

Today, we knew we were playing against an outstanding team and it's always going to be a tough place to visit. If you give Arsenal the ball, don't stop them from playing, then they'll dictate things and it becomes very dangerous from then on.

We had the chance to get an equaliser and Hugo had a chance at 2-0 which would have given us a bit more belief. But if we're being honest with ourselves we didn't reach the levels we wanted to and we weren't ourselves, and that's disappointing.

I know we are better than that though, we need to have the belief in ourselves, get on the ball and dictate things. It's not about who we're playing against, it's about us and our performances, so that's what we need to remember to improve in the future.

It's been a tough and demanding start to the league, we knew the games we had ahead, five of which were against teams who finished in the top six last season.

We'll use these experiences to grow as a team and make sure we get stronger game by game. We need to keep pushing ourselves towards being in our best condition and being able to be in a situation where we can dictate games.

Lets learn from this situation, in terms of wherever we go we have to be ourselves in order to be competitive.

Arsenal Wenger

We scored many goals and didn't concede, and three days after a very physically demanding game in Liege it is good to see we could repeat a good performance.

We have shown the right attitude and quality today and I am very optimistic there is something special in this team.

If you don't get points you are quickly off the pace in the Premier League so this was a big game for us and it was important to get three points.

But in the first four games we played three away games and we have only played twice at home now.

Next game

Things don't get any easier for Martinez as the Latics face Chelsea next weekend at the DW Stadium.
