Jewell speaks about missing out on the playoffs

"It doesn't feel good right now, but I suppose when I sit down in a couple of days time I will think that it has been a magnificent season. To lose it so late after playing well in the first half is a kick in the teeth but we have to look on and say we now know what the First Division is all about, we know where we need to improve."

There's only one Paul Jewell
"I feel sorry for the players because they were written off before the start of the season and were regarded as relegation candidates, and for the best part of forty minutes, we just couldn't get that second goal. But we have to give a big thanks to the players, but we've just been pipped at the post. The results even went our way so it feels worse."

"We're still going to have to improve over the summer, and I don't just mean bringing in new players, but the players that are already here will be better equipped for First Division football next year."

"I think the players have learnt a lot in the last year. Some of them have played at this level before, but most of them haven't. But it might even be more difficult next year in this division because the teams coming down will be strong, and the clubs that are coming up are big clubs too. I feel with some improvements we can have another go at it again."

"I think with the pressure, and with what was on stake on the game, the performance was outstanding, but West Ham had to come into it, because they were never in the game during the first half. The goal we conceded was disappointing but now is not the time to say why or where it wrong, we just haven't done it. All I want to say is credit to the players really."

"The occasion was fantastic, as was atmosphere, the players relished it and it will be nice if we can have a few more occasions like that next year. Anyone who has any common sense will recognise that these players have done the club proud, we would have liked to get into the play-offs to say thank you but it wasn't to be. The supporters have been smashing this year, and they've taken a lot of stick from the rest of the country but not from us."
