Jewell & Mahon Interviews

"I've been after Alan for a while as people have realised and I'm delighted that we've finally brought him in. We're lucky to have him and he'll come here and give us a natural option on the left hand side of midfield which is something we haven't had for a while. He's a nice lad and was desperate to come here and play football and that's very refreshing to see. He'll bring Premiership quality here and with him still only being 25 he probably still has his best years ahead of him.

"He'll go straight into the team tomorrow there's no doubt about that but at this point I'd like to pay tribute to the work Lee McCulloch has done out on the left in a foreign position to him over the past 18 months. He's been magnificent but just lately I think he's been finding it harder out there and having chatted to him he's admitted that himself.

"He'll benefit from the break and at this level I see him more as a centre forward and now he'll be able to compete for that position too. He showed at Crewe that he is a real handful up there and I'm sure he'll be putting lots of pressure on the other strikers to get a game. Like all the lads here he's a really good pro and I can't speak highly enough of his attitude whilst playing out of position on the left hand side of midfield."

Jewell then commented on Ipswich and what he thought of them, he said:
"It'll be a really tough game for us and it's a funny quirk that Alan wil make his debut against Ipswich. I think Joe Royle's gutted that he wasn't able to sign him but thankfully we have been able to. The pitch down there should suit us and with it being another former Premiership club they'll be a big crowd down there. That always seems to bring the best out in us and we're really looking forward to the game.

"When we beat Ipswich at the JJB back in August people had started to call for Joe's head but that was riciuclous and I always expected them to get back into the promotion hunt. They have some very good players and are one of the highest scoring teams in the Nationwide League I think.

"You only have to look at their last home game against Crewe which they won 6-4 for see the way they play and that should make for an entertaining game on Saturday!

"We go there with a fully fit squad to choose from which is great and that means I have plenty of options. That's just the way us managers like it and it means that we're now in much better shape. We'll be going down there looking to win the game as always, but if we are to do that we know that we are going to have to play very well to beat Joe's team."

Meanwhile the official site also grabbed a minute with new signing Alan Mahon, he said:"
This is an exciting move for me and with me not getting a real look in at Blackburn, I can't wait to get playing football again. This is a club that people see as going places and I agree with that. Having chatted at length with the Gaffer I was impressed and I am delighted to sign.

"I know John Filan from his time at Blackburn and I spoke to him about the place and he was very upbeat about the club, the set up and the group of players here. He said that they are a great bunch of lads and that's something that is very important to me.

"I'm looking forward to the game at Ipswich already and it is strange that my first appearance will be there. I've got a lot of time for Ipswich as they were all really kind to me when I was on loan there and I enjoyed it. Joe Royle was great and I have to say he is probably the best manager I've played under in terms of the respect he gets from the players and the respect he gives back in return.

"That move is all water under the bridge now though and I'm desperately hoping to contribute to a Wigan win down there. As debut matchs go it's a big one but it's one I'm really excited about. This club has got itself into a great position going into the last third of the season and we must do all we can to push for promotion.

"I've signed a long deal here and I wouldn't have done that if I didn't think that we were capable of getting to the Premiership. That's my aim and it's obviously the aim of everyone here and now we must try to make that happen as soon as we can."
