Taylor: Staking his claim for a first team place with another run out in the reserves
David Lowe's line up included Mike Pollitt, Ryan Taylor, Stephane Henchoz, David Wright and Damien Francis, who provided some first team experience amongst a youth filled squad.

Everton coach Andy Holden named experienced goalkeeper John Ruddy, along with Icelandic under 21 international Bjarni Vidarsson who had scored three times in his last three reserve games.

The Goodison side opened the scoring after 9 minutes when left back Lee Molyneux struck a 20 yard drive to the near post. Unfortunately for Wigan the ball managed to squeeze past latics keeper Mike Pollitt and into the bottom corner of the net.

Wigan defended well from that point and the first half saw very few chances at either end. The main talking point was a confrontation between Everton striker Victor Anichebe and Stephane Henchoz who, as a result, both found themselves in the book.

Latics started the second half well and pushed hard to get back into the game with a driven effort from Ryan Blaney that flew just over the bar.

Then Toffees keeper John Ruddy denied a superb effort from Lewis Montrose and seconds later a goal bound header from Damien Francis as Wigan began to dictate with 20 minutes left.

Wigan's persistence paid off with a deserved equaliser 75 minutes in. Chris McCaughtrie lashed his shot at Everton keeper Ruddy who deflected the ball straight into the path of Michael Hazeldine to tap in from close range.

Latics thought they had secured the point when a Steven Morrison header was cleared off the line by Ryan Blaney, but with five minutes remaining Everton delivered a cruel blow to take the victory.

A hopeful long ball forward ran loose to Bjarni Vidarsson who fired home to please an on looking David Moyes.

The reserves' next game is on the 19th April away to Newcastle United.
