Reserves: The Latics 0 Liverpool 2

Last updated : 03 November 2006 By Liam Cooper
The result means Liverpool climb to 8th place in Northern Premier Reserve League, 2 points above Latics who still remain a point clear of struggling Bolton at the bottom of the table.

Wigan's squad included some well known players including David Wright, Matt Jackson and Andreas Johansson who all appeared in the starting eleven. Latics' coach Mark Seagraves also fielded newly signed prospect David Cotterill, giving the Welsh striker some well needed match practise.

Latics started the game on the back foot when Liverpool captain Danny Guthrie went close to opening the scoring just four minutes in. His chipped effort from the corner of the box tipped over by Latics keeper Russell Saunders.

Saunders was kept busy soon after with good saves to deny David Mannix and 'pool striker Besian Idrizaj.

And the constant pressure soon led to a Liverpool breakthrough 33 minutes in. Idrizaj broke through down the left side before laying the ball back to Paul Anderson who opened the scoring with a clinical finish.

Six minutes into the second half they doubled their lead. Craig Lindfield was the provider with a precise pass to Austrian Besian Idrizaj who burst into the area and tapped in after Saunders had parried his initial effort.

Liverpool dominated the game and might have added to their lead only for a good display from Russell Saunders denying Latics blushes.

The reserves look to kick start their season when they face Everton on the 8h November at Robin Park Arena, kick off 7.30pm.
