The result provided a well needed boost to the squad and they leapfrog both
Liverpool and Bolton into 8th place in the Northern Premier Reserve League, just three games into the new season.

However their opponents Newcastle now sit second in the league and extend their unbeaten home run to 17 matches, showing just how impressive
Andy Webster
Wigan's showing was.

Aside from the result, Latics also took comfort in another 90 minute display from new signing Andy Webster. The defender impressing alongside Matt Jackson and gaining vital match fitness ahead of potential first team action this Saturday.

The match started quickly with Latics imposing themselves well in the opening stages. And it took only 2 minutes for the game's first chance, David Owens curling a free kick into the bottom right corner only for Toon keeper Pavel Srnicek to palm the ball away.

Wigan kept the pressure on and from the resulting corner Matthew
Hampson also went close, mistiming a header that flew just over the bar after a flick on from Webster.

Latics continued to press with Liam Atkin forcing Srnicek into a good save after creating space and firing from 25 yards out. However half time soon approached with neither side managing to make the breakthrough.

Nevertheless the second half provided Wigan with yet more chances to take the lead. 11 minutes after the break Kris King crossed the ball into David Wright who headed goalwards, only to see his effort bounce off the crossbar and back into the arms of the Newcastle keeper.

And 69 minutes in Srnicek made a fine reaction save, palming his teammate Huntington's header over the bar, ensuring a clean sheet and a share of the points.

The reserves will look to build on this performance when they travel to Manchester United next Thursday night. Kick off at 7.00 pm
