Bolton coach Jimmy Phillips also named a very strong side that included nine players with first team experience and international regulars such as Radhi Jaidi, El-Hadji Diouf, Jared Borgetti and Hidetoshi Nakata.

The Trotters started the game on top and it took only seven minutes for them to open the scoring. A headed through ball from Mexican international Jared Borgetti found ex-Blackburn striker Matt Jansen who crashing a left-footed volley over Wigan keeper Mike Pollitt from 25 yards out.

Wanderers continued to dominate and they doubled their lead with a well worked goal just before half time. Jansen turned provider and set up a clever cross for Borgetti to head home from close range.

The second half wasn't much better, as a scrappy game failed to produce any guilt-edge chances for latics to score.

Still Bolton piled on the misery late on, scoring their third goal after 83 minutes. Japanese international Hidetoshi Nakata sent a clever pass through to Johann Smith who slotted the ball past Pollitt with ease.
